Athlete Testing & ID

On April 8th, Athletics Ontario and the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario will be hosting the 2nd Athlete Testing Workshop for the purpose of creating an athlete database. This initiative is supported through the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) program and is open to OHPSI funded athletes as well as bantam, midget, youth and junior aged athletes. Coaches are also welcome to attend.

The OHPSI program was designed to support a comprehensive provincial high performance sport system that allows for sustained success of athletes and coaches at the very highest levels of international sport. The goal of the OHPSI program is to identify and support Ontario athletes who are best capable of achieving future international success on senior national teams.

The data collected will be shared with coaches and athletes to be used as a tool for training. This will also be a great opportunity for coaches to learn more about their athlete’s strengths and weaknesses.

Athletes will be put through six field tests to assess balance, power, speed, coordination. The testing will not over exert the athletes and they will rotate through the tests fairly quickly, taking no more than five minutes per athlete. A maximum of 40 athletes will be accepted, allowing for a breakdown of 4 groups of 10 athletes. The testing will be conducted in the following order:

  1. Counter Movement Jump (Force Plate) – 3 Jumps
  2. Drop Jump (Opto Jump) – 2 Jumps
  3. 30 Meter Acceleration (Opto Jump) – 2 Runs
  4. Flying 30 Meter (20 Meter Build Up) (Opto Jump) – 2 Runs
  5. Broad Jump – 2 Jumps
  6. Triple Broad Jump – 2 Jumps

Based on athlete and coach feedback from our December Testing opportunity we have made a number of changes to the workshop:

  • A shorter overall day: athletes will receive an arrival time slot to reduce wait times and the overall day
  • More relevant and user friendly feedback
  • Direct alignment with Athletics Canada testing protocols
