2022 Canada Summer Games Recap

Niagara Region hosted the long-awaited 2022 Canada Summer Games from August 6th – 21st. The Athletics competitions commenced on Tuesday August 16th and saw two sessions of impressive performances, ending Saturday August 20th. The Team Ontario athletics contingent of 64 athletes brought home 43 medals to contribute to Ontario’s winning total medal count of 198.

On Tuesday, a pair of para shot putters were the first on the podium for Team O – Laura Calovini earned bronze in women’s shot put (para) with a combined distance of 462.00m and Jesse Zesseu won gold in men’s shot put (para) with a combined distance of 569.00m. Lynton Lam and Sage Stoyka Kay dominated the women’s pole vault competition to finish in first and second place respectively, after both cleared 3.70m.

On day two Rosie Long raced to a time of 5:55.26 in the women’s 1500m wheelchair and captured silver. Tai Young matched this result on the men’s side with a time of 4:35.13. There was another sweep on top of the podium in the women’s triple jump as Jasmine Scott-Kilgo and Peace Omonzane claimed the gold and silver, with jumps of 12.74m and 12.56m respectively. Jared Hendricks-Polack started and ended the first session of athletics with an incredible performance in the men’s decathlon and 6,388 point total to win bronze.

Athletics action returned on Friday, as did Tai Young winning silver again, this time in the men’s 100m wheelchair with a 17.71 result. Rosie Long got the gold in the women’s 100m wheelchair race with a time of 20.83. Eliezer Adjibi earned first-place in the men’s 100m along with the Canada Games Record with his time of 10.32. Michael Roth added to the gold collection after running 47.37 in the men’s 400m. The men’s 4x100m of Immanuel Onyemah, Michael Roth, Alex Collins and Eliezer Adjibi was untouchable with a first place finish in a time of 40.52. Our 400 meter hurdlers capped off Friday’s track session with two second-place finishes – David Moulongou in a time of 52.79 and Tolu Akinduro with 1:01.19.

Friday’s field events shone with Thomas Becker soaring to a silver medal in the men’s high jump after clearing 2.12m. Team Ontario’s throwers were unstoppable with Grace Tennant’s 16.00m shot put easily securing gold, Josh Mather’s 69.72m javelin throw for gold and Eric Tyler right behind him on the podium with 69.23m. Madison McLean also earned gold in the women’s javelin with 47.84m and Dennis Ohene-adu understood the assignment, taking home gold in men’s shot put with 16.91m. Thomas Nedow also joined the podium, earning bronze with 16.07m. Femi Akinduro broke the Canada Games record and secured gold in the men’s triple jump with his 16.26m result.

Team O’s dominance didn’t let up on the last day of competition. On the track, Michael Roth returned to the top of the podium in the men’s 200m after running 21.20. Mitchell Ubene won silver in the men’s 5000m with a time of 14:23.48. Sadie-Jane Hickson’s 2:09.39 performance in the women’s 800m earned her silver and Tai Young went three for three after earning bronze in the 400m wheelchair. The sprint hurdlers meant business as David Adeleye earned a silver medal with his time of 14.03, and Tyra Boug and Aliyah Logan claimed gold and silver respectively with times of 13.64 and 13.79. Six runners got the men’s 4x400m through prelims to a bronze medal – Miles Brackenbury, Michael Petersen, Michael Roth, David Moulongou, Luca Nicoletti and Alex Collins.

In the field, Trinity Shadd-Ceres made her mark in the pit with a Canada Games record long jump of 6.40m along with the gold medal. Hannah Blair earned Team O another combined events medal, with 5,378 points and silver in the heptathlon. Brennan Seguin vaulted to first place with a 5.00m clearance. Dennis Ohene-adu and Thomas Nedow added to their hauls with another gold and bronze in the men’s discus. Another double podium on the women’s side as Trinity Tutti and Grace Tennant claimed gold and silver – along with a Games record for Trinity. The men’s long jumpers had another double podium performance – Jonathan Jacob and Kenneth West both jumped 7.36m and collected the gold and silver medals. The last athletics medals came from Joanne Lee capturing bronze in the women’s discus (para) event and Jesse Zesseu with silver in the men’s discus (para).

With all that being said, this long awaited event was a huge success and couldn’t have been possible without all the amazing people behind the scenes working day and night.
