A Strong Close to the Indoor Championship Season

The final meets of the 2020 Indoor Championship series took place this weekend, and we had some outstanding performances from athletes of all ages. The weekend began on Saturday with our first ever U8, U10, U12 Provincial Championship, and concluded on Sunday with the 50th Annual Ontario Masters Athletics Indoor Championship.

With the U8, U10 and U12 age categories being brand new, every winning time or standard has set a new meet record. As always, we saw some amazing performances by the young athletes. In the U12 girls shot put, Jenna Tunks of London Legion Track and Field Club, out threw all of the competition with the best mark of the entire day, 9.72m, earning herself a gold medal.

In the U8 boys competition, Nathan Jeyanathan of United Tamil Sports Club, took home five gold medals, after competing in the 150m, 300m, vertical jump, long jump and shot put.

Bianka Macmillan of United Tamil Sports Club, earned four gold medals across both track and field events in the U10 age category. Her events included the 60m Hurdles, 150m dash, high jump, and long jump.

We would first like to give a special thank you to all of our officials, volunteers and Monte Cristo Track club, for helping to make the first ever U8, U10, U12 Championship such a great success. In addition, we like to thank the following clubs for their participation: Airblastoff Lion, Boarder City Athletic Club, Boardwalk RC, Boost Athletics, Durham Dragons, Glen Manor Track Club, London Legion T.F.C., Thunderbolt, United Tamil Sports Club, and all unattached Ontario athletes.

On Sunday, current Canadian and World Masters record holder, Karla Del Grande, of Variety Village Athletic Club, produced some amazing performances, winning gold in the W65 60m (8.91s), 200m (29.93s), and 400m (1:09.30s).

The bar was set high by Don Ritchie in the M55 high jump competition. Ritchie’s jump of 1.90m not only won him the gold medal in his age category, but was the highest mark set all day.

In the W45 shot put competition, Tracy Viggers earned herself a gold medal with a huge throw of 9.68m. Her throw was the farthest mark by a female across all age categories.

The OMA 50th annual championship ended with a bang in the M55 4x400m relay. The unattached Ontario team of Serge Faucher, Simon Rayner, Jose Fuentes, and Athletics Ontario CEO, Paul Osland smashed the M55 age group world indoor record with a time of 4:05.85, beating the previous record by nearly 20 seconds.
