Athletics competition begins tomorrow at Summer Youth Olympic Games

NANJING, China – Athletics competition begins tomorrow at the second edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. 680 athletes will compete for medals in 37 track and field events.

Competition at the Youth Olympic Games started Saturday (August 16) and continues through to the 28 with athletics scheduled from the 20 to the 26. The first three days will see qualification rounds with finals taking place August 23 through to the 25. The mixed gender 8×100-metres relay event takes place on the final day of athletics competition, August 26.

10 Canadian Track and Field athletes will see action – Qualification round overview

Day 1 – Wednesday August 20

  • Jeremiah Ort of Carmen, Man., will kick things off in the boys 3000-metres heats at 18:55 local time (6:55am Eastern Time)
  • Emanuelle Massé of Laval, Que., lines up in the 100-metre hurdles heats at 19:20 local time (7:20am ET)
  • At 20:00 local time (8:00am ET) Magali Roche of Montreal, Que., competes in the girls long jump qualification
  • Kyra Constantine of Brampton, Ont., in the girls 400-metres heats at 20:35 local time (8:35am ET)

Day 2 – Thursday August 21

  • Braydon Rennie of Mississauga, Ont., will line up in the boys 1500-metres heats at 19:40 local time (7:40am ET)

Day 3 – Friday August 22

  • Brittni Wolczyk of Port Coquitlam, B.C., looks to advance in the girls javelin qualification at 18:35 local time (6:35am ET)
  • In the girls 400-metre hurdles heats London, Ont.’s Lexi Aitken takes to the start line at 18:55 local time (6:55am ET)
  • Tristan Slater of North Bay, Ont., jumps in the boys pole vault qualification at 19:00 local time (7:00am ET)
  • The boys 200-metres heats will feature Ottawa, Ont.’s Shermar Paul at 20:05 local time (8:05am ET)
  • Tegan Wilson of Calgary, Alta., races in the girls 200-metres at 20:35 local time (8:35am ET)
