Athletics Ontario Coaching Award in Memory of Beloved Coach Nyron Higgins

Athletics Ontario was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of a passionate, caring member of the Athletics community, Coach Nyron (Ron) Higgins of Durham Legion Athletics.

A man of distinction, Nyron served our country with honour as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 27 years. He loved reggae music, and had a smile that could light up the night. Nyron continued a life dedicated to service as an esteemed coach, loved by all. His greatest joy came when pouring his time – and sharing his wisdom – with athletes of all ages in the sprints and hurdles disciplines, something he did for over 25 years. Through his mentorship, Coach Nyron impacted countless young people, developing not only outstanding athletes, but outstanding people. Coach Nyron never stopped giving back, and his athletic and life lessons will live on in the athletes who were so fortunate to have his influence in their lives. To say the Ontario track and field community has lost a giant would be an understatement, and Athletics Ontario mourns with those who loved Coach Nyron.

Friends of Durham Legion Athletics, with the support of Athletics Ontario, are planning to establish an annual Coaching Award in memory of Coach Nyron (Ron) Higgins. The annual award will include a small purse of funds to support the continued professional development of the award recipient.  As we work to set up the trust with the National Sport Trust Fund (NSTF), we invite you to complete the attached form if you are are interested in donating to the award. We will e-mail those who have expressed interest when the fund is set up for donations.

We thank everyone in advance for their interest in keeping Coach Nyron’s love of coaching a part of our sport and community.
