Bantam, Midget, Youth (BMY) Championships and Combined Events Championships

This past weekend Athletics Ontario and the University of Windsor Athletics club hosted the BMY Championships and Combined Events Championships in some of the hottest weather we’ve had all summer.

The heat did not stop athletes from achieving personals bests or setting a new record.

The Championships kicked off on Friday evening with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon events. Olympian, Damian Warner was on hand to do one final tune up in the men’s shot put and 400m race before leaving for the Rio Olympics .

Saturday provided to be one of the hottest days of the weekend, with athletes competing in 34-degree temperatures. The Women’s Heptathlon and Men’s Decathlon events wrapped up with Windsor Legions very own Shawn Beaudion scoring 6,696 points. Dallyssa Huggins, who competed unattached finished first in the Women’s Heptathlon with a score of 5,308 points. Athletes gave everything they had, including Alisha Murray from Windsor Legion, who tied the U13 record in the 80m with a time of 10.67 during the preliminary race.

Sunday was a day for breaking records. With a storm system sitting over the Windsor area, athletes took advantage of the rainy conditions to put together some impressive performances on the track. The University of Toronto Track Club team A set a new record in the Youth boys 1600 Sprint Medley with a time of 3:33.48, crushing the previous record by two seconds. If setting a new record was not enough, athletes got the surprise of a lifetime as Olympian and Windsor Legion athlete, Brandon McBride stopped by to give out medals and take pictures with some awe-struck athletes.

The BMY Championships and Combined Events Championships marked the end of AO’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Thank you to all athletes, coaches and officials who made the trip out to Windsor. Athletics Ontario would like to recognize the City of Windsor and Girard Flowers for providing our medalist with beautiful carnations and City of Windsor pins to celebrate their achievements at the BMY Championships.
