Maxwell is most well known for his success as a marathon runner, and was crowned the Canadian Marathon Champion in 1975. In 1977, Maxwell finished 3rd at the Boston Marathon and was ranked 3rd in the world by TFN (2:14.33). In 1980, Maxwell once again was the Canadian Marathon Champion, and was named to a three-member Canadian Olympic marathon team which did not participate due to the U.S.-led boycott.
