Athletics Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee nominated 89 athletes to the 2015 Pan American Games Team.Fifty-one (51) competitors from Ontario have been nominated for the team. The Ontario team includes Shawn Barber, Andre DeGrasse, Khamica Bingham, and Sultana Frizell.
Shawn Barber set the Canadian Indoor and Outdoor Pole Vault records earlier this year. NCAA Champion in the 100 and 200m, Andre DeGrasse is ready to take on the world’s best. He most recently broke the Canadian 200m record with a time of 20.03 presently ranking him 4th in the world.
Khamica Bingham, the only Canadian-male or female-to earn a place in the 100m finals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games is set to make her Pan Am debut next month. Sultana Frizell, the silver medallist in the hammer throw at the 2011 Pan American Games returns to the Games with her sights set on gold.
The team includes two Pan Am medallists from Ontario. Along with Frizell, Jessica Zelinka will compete in the heptathlon, in which she won the gold medal at the 2007 Pan Am Games held in Rio de Janeiro.
The 2015 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alta., July 2 to 5 will serve as an important precursor to the Games for all athletes set to compete in Toronto. The National Championships will also function as the trials for the World Championship Team and the Panamerican Junior Championship, both of which will be held later this summer.
