Peter Manning was inducted into the Athletics Canada Hall of Fame in 2017 as a Coach, though he also served on Athletics Canada’s Board of Directors from 1969 to 1973.

Manning, who started as a runner himself, earned his coaching qualifications in England before immigrating to Canada in 1957. He lived in Montreal, Winnipeg, Guelph and called Belwood, Ont., home since 1974.

Manning never personally ran in the Olympic Games or at the World Championships, but he prepared several athletes that did. Best known for his time in Guelph, Manning was a mainstay trackside in the 1970s and 1980s and mentored hundreds, possibly thousands, of young people.

After arriving in Guelph, Manning coached Rachelle Campbell, Margaret McGowan, Yvonne Saunders and Joyce Yakubowich to an eighth-place finish in the 4×400-metre relay at the 1976 Olympic Games setting a Canadian record. He also served as one of Canada’s sprint coaches that year, in addition to Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988.

Then in 1992, Manning was named Canada’s Head Sprint Coach for the Barcelona Games and continued to work with Canada’s relay teams heading into Atlanta in 1996.

Over the course of his nearly 60-year career, Manning coached many athletes to the Pan American Games and a myriad of other international events. In 1974, Manning was named Athletics Canada’s Coach of the Year and was runner up for the Air Canada Coach of the Year Award in 1975.
