Alex Oakley was a member of the 1956, 1960, 1964, 1972 and 1976 Olympic Teams. Alex posted a 6th place finish in the 50km walk at the 1960 Olympic Games and he was 9th in the 20km walk. At the 1963 Pan American Games, Alex won the Gold medal in the 20km Walk and was a member 2 Commonwealth Games Teams, 1966 and 1970.


Aged 50 when he made his final Olympic appearance in 1976, he is the oldest person ever to compete in a track and field event at the Olympics.

Alex took a gold medal in both the 5 and 25 km events at the 1975 World Masters Games. He was a member of the Canadian Team at both the 1966 and ’70 Commonwealth Games.

In 1986, he was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame. NHL star Bobby Orr and NHL Manager Harry Sinden were inducted at the same time
