For more than 35 years Betty and David Watson were heavily involved as officials at some of the biggest track and field competitions ever held in Canada, Betty as the reader of photofinisher cameras and David as a starter’s assistant or recall starter.

But they were always ready to officiate wherever needed.

Their expertise saw them officiate at the 2001 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, 1999 Pan Am Games, 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, 1993 IAAF World Indoor Championships and countless national championships. In addition, they were sought out for international invitational competitions such as the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games.

David wrote an indispensable national criteria for the Athletes Control Centre. Betty and David were both recognized with a variety of Province of Ontario and Officials Council awards. David was also a recipient of the Governor General’s Jubilee Award.

They were always involved in mentoring the next generation of officials in their craft. York University Kinesiology students, for instance, earned extra marks for assisting and learning to officiate at York University indoor meets.
