Athletes from across Canada represented their country on home soil this past Saturday, February 29th, at Athletics Canada’s 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Cup in Victoria, British Columbia.
Sadie Sigfstead of Edmonton, Alberta earned an individual silver medal in the junior women’s 6km race with a time of 23:23s, leading the junior women’s team to gold. Ceili McCabe of Vancouver, BC., (6th), Petal Palmer of Scarborough, ON., (7th), Annika Ariano of Coldstream, BC., (19th) and Mackenzie Campbell of Kingston, ON., (23rd) also contributed to the team score to help secure back-to-back gold medals for the junior women’s team. Abbey Yuhasz of Waterloo, ON., was also named to the team, but did not finish.
In the junior men’s 8km race, solid performances were displayed by Philippe Morneau-Cartier of Quebec City, QC., (7th), Keon Wallingford of North Bay, ON., (8th), Scott Arndt of Waterloo, ON., (12th), Dakota Goguen of Newmarket, ON., (17th) and Kevin Robertson of Ottawa, ON., (19th), which earned the junior men’s team a bronze medal. Chase Canty of Windsor, ON., was also named to the team, but did not finish.
Genevieve Lalonde of Moncton, NB., ran away with the senior women’s 10km race title, with a time of 37:37s, finishing 32 seconds ahead of the next competitor and earning herself the individual gold medal. All of the Canadian senior women finished in the top 20 including Natasha Wodak of North Vancouver, BC., (4th), Victoria Coates of Hamilton, ON., (7th), Maria Bernard-Galea of Calgary, AB., (10th), Hannah Woodhouse of Clarksburg, ON., (16th) and Kirsten Lee of Port Coquitlam, BC., (18th). These outstanding performances by the senior women earned the team a first place finish.
Connor Black of Plympton-Wyoming, ON., led the senior men’s team with a fifth place individual finish, and the senior men’s team placed third in the competition. Following Black across the finish line were John Gay of Kelowna, B.C., (7th), Mitchell Ubene of Tecumseh, ON., (11th), Jean-Simon Desgagnés of Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, QC., (16th), Kieran McDonald of Edmonton, AB., (17th), and Brandon Allen of Amherstburg, ON., (23rd).
