George Shepherd (1938-2022)
The Athletics Ontario Board of Directors, Staff and Officials Executive committee were deeply saddened upon learning of the sudden passing of George Shepherd on May 19, 2022. The 2015 Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame inductee passed away at the age of 84. As an athlete, George was a member of the Canadian team at the 1960 Olympic Games, competing in the 440-yard hurdles.
The following quotes are words shared by colleagues and friends of George. He will be greatly missed in our community and we offer our sincerest condolences to his family.
“We are saddened by the passing of George Shepherd . He was recently a track ref at a TDSSAA meet on Friday, May 17th. He suffered a heart attack that evening, was put into an induced coma to help the pain. Unfortunately, as tough a competitor George was, he did not survive the event. George gave his life to family, students, athletes, coaches, and to all of us in the high school track community. We will miss his good heart, laughter, humour, and many jokes that we all looked forward to over the years.” – Fellow teachers, past and present at TDSB
“I remember watching George run at The Telegram Indoor Games back in the 60’s. It was always exciting to watch the home town runners compete at Maple Leaf Gardens.” – Lynn McFerran
