The Royal Canadian Legion National Championships took place last weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. We had numerous athletes there both to represent Team Ontario, and to compete for their Clubs. Our athletes had some tremendous performances, and even set some new records!
Aysia Maurice, of 310 Running, after just winning gold in the U16 1500m Steeplechase at our Championships in Windsor, set out to do it again. She had a fantastic race, finished first, and also broke her own U16 Athletics Ontario record, running a new fastest time of 4:51.77.
Riley Flemington just set a new provincial record in the U16 Boys 1200m at our last meet in Windsor, and just competed again in the same event in Sydney. He came up just shy of breaking the record again, finishing first in a time of 3:07.27. The time was also good enough to earn him a new Championship record. Also on the track, Domenic Barresi of Hamilton Olympic Club earned himself a silver medal in the U18 Boys 100m in a final time of 11.33 seconds, and a gold medal in the U18 200m, in a time of 21.98 seconds.
Out in the field, things were heating up for Ryan Jacklin, an athlete representing Team Ontario. Earning three gold medals, he also set a new national record in the U18 Men’s Hammer Throw! His final attempt of 69.74m was good enough for gold and surpassed the old Canadian record of 69.54m. He also earned gold in the U18 Men’s Discus with a best throw of 53.95m, and in the U18 Men’s Shot Put, with a best throw of 19.34m. Fantastic work Ryan!
Also in the field, Alexandria Webb was representing Team Ontario when she set a new Championship record in the U18 Women’s Javelin Throw! After just breaking Elizabeth Gleadle’s National record a few weeks back, her performance of 49.88m earned her the gold medal and new Championship record title.
We are extremely proud of all of our athletes, and you all deserve credit on a fantastic 2019 outdoor season. We’ll see you next year!
