This past weekend saw the conclusion of the Open and Para Championships, the U18 Combined Events Championships and the Mixed Race Walk Championships. At the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York, over the span of three days, nearly 500 athletes from across the province competed for Provincial titles in their respective events.
The meet saw some record breaking performances to go with some outstanding runs, jumps and throws.
In the 100m, Marissa Papconstantinou, who is off to Tokyo as a member of Canada’s Paralympic team, broke her own T64 Canadian record with a time of 13.12s. In the 800m, Aimee Jessop of Monarch AC, set a new provincial record, in the W40-45 division, with a time of 2:08.83.
Micha Powell, who ran for Canada at Rio 2016, took home two golds in the 400m and 200m respectively. In the 400m, she crossed the line with a time 52.55s, nearly four seconds faster than her nearest competitor. In the 200m, she clocked in with a time of 23.37s.
In the Men’s High Jump, Aiden Grout of the Langley Mustangs, set a personal best while winning the event with a height of 2.19m. Grout is off to the U20 World Championships where he will be jumping for Team Canada.
In the U18 Combined Events, Dani Allen of the Durham Dragons took home the gold with a score of 3805, while Stephen Davis of London Western took home gold with a score of 6520.
In the Mixed Race Walk Championships, Xu Jianping who took home the gold on the Men’s side with a blistering 26:57.55. On the Women’s side, Faith Lee finished atop the podium with a time of 31:49.29.
