The U20 Championships took place this past weekend at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University. Over the span of four days, almost 400 athletes from across the province competed for Provincial titles in their respective events.
The first championship of the season also marked the deadline to qualify for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, which are set to take place from August 17 through August 22.
The meet saw many outstanding performances, including a few Athletics Ontario athletes who achieved auto-qualifying standard for the U20 World Championships.
Michael Roth of St. Thomas Legion Track and Field Club qualified in both the 200m and 400m, respectfully. He ran the exact qualifying time in the men’s 400m, with a winning time of 47.35s in the pouring rain. Roth also won gold in the 200m with a time of 21.18s, and the 4x400m, where he was the anchor for the team as they ran a 3:24.65s.
In the same event Flying Angels Track Club sprinter, Almond Small, ran alongside Roth to take the Men’s 200m silver medal with a time of 21.26s. Small was the first to cross the men’s 100m finish line, taking home the gold with a time of 10.70s. He will also be competing for Canada at the U20 World Championship in both events.
Micaiah Ellis, an unattached athlete, confirmed his chance of competing at the U20 World Championship in the men’s 800m, where he ran a qualifying time of 1:50.47 in a nail-biting race. (U20 World standard is 1:50.80). Ellis also ran in the 400m, where he placed fifth with a time of 49.42s.
On the women’s side, Hallee Knelson of St. Thomas Legion Track and Field Club narrowly missed out on achieving the U20 World auto-qualifying standard in the women’s 800m, running an exciting race in a time of 2:09.16s, the U20 world standard is 2:08.70s.
Bianca Borgella of the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club is a T13 para athlete, who competed in three events over the weekend. She unofficially broke her own Canadian record in the 100m, with a time of 12.74s. Borgella also placed eighth in the women’s 200m, with a time of 25.86s. She also brought home a silver medal as the anchor in the 4x100m relay.
We would like to give a special thank you to all of our volunteers, including those from York University TFC and JamCan International Athletics!
