World Record highlights 49th Annual Ontario Masters Championships

The 2021 Outdoor Championship season continued this past weekend with the completion of the 49th Annual Ontario Masters Championship. The two-day event ran from August 14th to August 15th at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University. The weekend showcased extraordinary talent as the meet featured several new meet records, a couple of national records and even played host to a world record.

Karla Del Grande was the big winner of the weekend as she took home two golds while setting an unofficial World Record. Karla set a World Record, in the W65 division, with a time of 54.00s in the 300m Hurdles, pending ratification. The previous record of 54.06s was set by Australian athlete Marge Alison in 2011. Karla came close to breaking this record last summer running 54.70s in her second ever long hurdle race! This performance unofficially adds a SIXTH outdoor world record to her resume, for a total of TEN world records!

Del Grande also took home a gold in the W65 400m, finishing with a time of 1:08.31, setting a new meet record. This made Karla the first person to run the time of her own age (68) in the 400m event for her age category.

On the field, Adri Rowswell had a successful weekend in the W80 division as she took home gold in the both Discus and Shot Put, setting meet records in the process. In the Discus competition, she recorded a distance of 18.39m in her first throw, beating the old meet record by over two metres. In the shot put competition, she put up a distance of 7.17m, just beating the previous record held by Velta Thomas of 7.15m.

In the Women’s 5000m, Elizabeth Waywell set a new Canadian Record for the W60 division as she crossed the finish line with a great time of 20:22.35, beating the old record by nearly seven seconds.

On the Men’s side of the Track, William Yelverton finished the weekend with three golds, setting meet records with all three. His first gold and record came in the 100m when he finished first in the M60 division with a time of 12.43s. In the 200m, he crossed the line with a blistering time of 25.36, winning his division by nearly two seconds. His third and final medal came in the 400m where he won his race with a time of 56.23. That time shattered the meet record by nearly three seconds.

Scoring as a club overall, JamCan International Athletics took home the team trophy, after  accumulating the most points over the weekend.

We would like to give a special thank you to all our amazing athletes, their coaches, our fantastic volunteers from the Newmarket Huskies Track Club, and all the spectators for an amazing weekend of competition and we hope to see you back on the track soon!
